The pivot that wasn't a pivot
You’d think I spend a lot of time in lines at In-N-Out, and while I do spend a fair amount of time at lines for In-N-Out for my family, it’s only like once or twice a week maybe. I don’t know. So the next one on my list to talk about was going to be the pivot that I made. So last year, late last year, maybe middle to late last year, I was thinking of pivoting this year to not pivoting, but like introducing, trying to introduce more opportunities for speaking.
I’ve done a bunch of speaking opportunities, which have been great. I had a really fun time doing that in the last couple of years, and I thought it would be amazing to do some more of those. So that was the idea. I was going to pivot this year and start marketing myself.
I did all this research. I took a couple of courses and stuff last year. And I’ve I have a lot of things to talk about. I’ve been working in tech for a while and entertainment, all kinds of different things.
And it was going to be about creating magic, what it takes to create things that I’ve learned, the struggles I’ve had, the ways I’ve overcome things. And I love working with people and getting to meet people face to face and talking to them, hearing their stories. And that was what it was going to be obviously giving up, getting out there, giving a keynote, perhaps performing magic or some mind reading along the way, but delivering a really powerful message. So that was the goal.
And then the whole AI thing is what happened. And got to pause it. All right. So I had to take a real quick call.
Still in In-N-Out’s parking or drive-through. All right. So yeah, AI happened. So it was going to be a talk all about creativity, which I’ve been giving this talk and how to how to kind of plan things out and how the process works to kind of maximize your opportunity for creating something and bringing it into the world.
A lot of speakers speak about speaking. I don’t know how to explain it. They’re motivational speakers and I get it. There’s, that’s great.
People need motivational speakers, but they, if you look at their resume, they haven’t done a lot except build up their speaking business. So they’re experts at building up a funnel in a business. Fine. That’s great.
Those are valuable things. But I thought maybe since I’ve been able to build a few things in my life and deliver them and get people using them, that maybe this would be, maybe I’d have something to say and put in some work in my life again, back into that, putting into the work. And I thought I would share some of the things that I learned with people because I thought it would be fun. And I, like I said, I’ve been doing it and it has been fun.
So, so AI came out and that changed the workflow and I knew it, and I, like I knew right away, like I said, I knew it was going to change everything and it has, and I needed to adjust the strategy for what how would I explain this to people when this is going to be a huge part of it? And I needed to learn a lot about it. And I wanted to be at the forefront, try to stay on the edge of it. So that’s what I’ve been trying to do.
I, Oh, I see, I’ve seen so many, not so many, a few self-help books come out in the last like few months. There was one that came out, I think just this week, all about like systems, one system for every single week of the year. And I’m like, Oh my gosh, this might be amazing. It might’ve been great.
And the person put in four years to write this book. So, Oh my gosh, great. You know, I w I could have easily been that person who started writing a book four years ago. And then all of a sudden I didn’t know it was going to coincide and collide with what’s happening today.
So 52 systems for 52 weeks, you’re supposed to go through and read them and apply them to your life. Well, I’m thinking like, if I can just take the PDF of that and throw that into my, uh, my agents, they can help coach me on that. and they might actually be able to do a lot of the work. A lot of that, those are going to be systems.
Like, of course it’s probably going to be exercise and diet, all the standard things you throw into like a self-help book, and other ways to optimize what time day you’re supposed to do your emails and stuff. I don’t even read my agents, read my emails. So like the whole book is probably sadly for the person who wrote it out of date. but they spent years doing it and preparing a book launch and all that.
So they have to go through with it. But honestly, people are they’re, we’re, we’re having AI take over a lot of those menial day-to-day tasks that just eat up our time or there, or that’s, what’s going to come. That’s what’s happening. If you’re not doing it yet, it will be there soon enough.
It’ll be there soon enough for you. So don’t that’s just where it’s going. so it’s a great book. I’m sure it was a great book five years ago today.
Maybe there’s some value in there. If you throw it into your into your agent and have it like try to optimize all the things that it’s telling you to do. And then of course there’s some things you’re just only you have to do. You have to still build the discipline to eat healthy and exercise and do the James clear thing the habits become the kind of person who exercises all that kind of stuff.
Right. That we are. That’s kind of out there now. so because of that, I had to then I put it on pause and I’m like, well, I would love to go do it someday, but right now my focus has been like learning about these tools, learning how to maximize them, learning what they mean, learning how it changes the creative workflow.
And it’s going to keep changing of course, but I think I have a much better sense today of then what, then I would have if I had, uh, if I just started like going and giving this talk on creativity it would have been so out of date immediately. So, yeah, now I’m thinking about what that next, when I do it, when I will do it, I think I’m going to do it someday. Cause I like, I like the idea of it. I think there’s some things I can share, but I want to have the right context and the right framing to do it with where we’re going and where I see things going now.
So yeah, the pivot, the pivot that wasn’t a pivot that may become a pivot again.
